Sharpe Pritchard (SP) advised Great British Energy (GBE) on a £40 million strategic equity investment into ITM Power. The transaction was led by SP’s Energy and Infrastructure team – Steve Gummer (Partner) and Meghan Vaillancourt (Senior Associate).

The investment will fund the 1 GW expansion of ITM’s facility in Sheffield and accelerate development of its next-generation ‘Chronos’ electrolyser technology, aimed at lowering costs, improving efficiency, and supporting wider adoption of green hydrogen. The investment will also create 400 jobs and establish South Yorkshire as the home of Europe’s largest electrolyser factories.

Strategically, the deal strengthens the UK’s domestic clean energy capability and underscores the importance of building an integrated hydrogen supply chain, from manufacturing through to deployment, while aligning regulatory, funding, and commercial frameworks to enable projects at scale. With this investment, the UK government and GBE are signalling strong support for the domestic hydrogen industry and delivering greater energy security in support of Britain’s clean energy mission.
